Inside Ukraine’s Drone Units

I don’t like to link to or embed stuff from CNN, but this look inside one of Ukraine’s drone units is pretty informative.

  • They move constantly, and launch drone attacks from different locations in the dead of night.
  • Despite the impression given by some videos here, they say that the Russian air defenses are “pretty good.”
  • They launch a lot of decoy drones at the same time for the Russian to shoot down.
  • The real drones are Antanov 196s, which can carry up to 500 pound warheads as far as 1,300 miles.
  • Naturally, they want the American government to give them permission to use American-supplied weapons to strike deeper into Russia…

The Antonov Horlytsia drone referred to by CNN here as the Antanov 196 is actually made by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) from a 2016 Antonov design.

A GRU hunter-killer team operating in the guise of PKK guerillas attacked TAI’s Kahramankazan facility NW of Ankara on 23 October 2024, killing seven TAI employees and wounding 22.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov just stated, for the record, lest anyone have any doubts about the events of 23 October:

“Regrettably, Ankara continues its military-technical cooperation with the Kiev regime. Turkish weapons are being used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to kill Russian soldiers and civilians, which is perplexing in light of the Turkish leadership’s statements of readiness to offer mediation services,” he said.

This is how the Russians have negotiated with their southern neighbors since the Battle of Kulikovo Field in 1380.
