BOOM! Oberlin College Hit By Maximum Punitive Damages in Gibson Bakery Case

Boom goes the breaking news dynamite:

The jury just rendered its verdict on punitive damages in the Gibson’s Bakery v. Oberlin College case.

Daniel McGraw, our reporter in the courtroom, reports that in addition to the $11.2 million compensatory damages awarded last Friday, the jury awarded a total of $33 million in punitive damages, which will probably be reduced by the court to $22 million because of the state law cap at twice compensatory (it’s not an absolute cap, but probably will apply here). That brings the total damages to $33 million. We will have the breakdown soon. The jury also awarded attorney’s fees, to be determined by the judge.

The breakdown was:

David Gibson – $17.5 million punitive damages

Allyn W. Gibson — $8.75 million punitive damages

Gibson Bros. Inc. (the Bakery) – $6,973,500 punitive damages

Oberlin was saying that their financial situation is so precarious that a big award would finish them off, despite having an endowment worth $887 million, and only having 10% of the student body pay full tuition. Twitchy had some pungent replies:

You can be a stable institution of higher education, or you can get woke and wage social justice warfare.

Pick one.

Wah, bitches. See if your SJW buddies will crowdfund your defense. (actually, they probably will … maybe Ben & Jerry’s will pitch in, too, along with the 187 other companies doing their virtue-signaling lately … but … I think I would be fine with that)

    Get woke? Go broke!

How is it that a college with 2800 students also has 1100 faculty?

Howard: I’m guessing the nominal $70,000 a year per student may have something to do with it…

That’s one thing that bugs me. If something is priced at $70k, and yet 90% of consumers purchase it at a discount (grants and scholarships) … that feels like deceptive pricing. Maybe legal, but still shitty.

Gotta think, if you’re an Obie student and you’re among the 10% paying full-price, you have to wonder if you’re being ripped off.

Oh … and, here’s a gem I just learned: guess where Lena Dunham went to school?

    LOL
