While writing yesterday’s Houston forensic backlog story, it occurred to me that I never heard the outcome of the pending murder trial of Ex-Houston Police Officer Gerald Goines. Goines is accused of falsifying information on the warrant on a no-knock narcotics raid in which he and his fellow officers killed two people.
As far as I can tell, that’s because the trial hasn’t happened yet, despite the original raid happening in January of 2019. The most recent activity was the judge refusing to dismiss the charges, and another court limiting the mere presence of Goines in a case as a possible cause for appeal to a ten year stretch starting in 2008.
The only other news I’ve found was that Steven Bryant, another officer on the raid, pled guilty to federal tampering charges back in 2021.
I know that Flu Manchu lockdowns delayed a lot of trials all around the country, but four and a half years is an inordinately long time for a murder trial to be pending, as you start to run into due process concerns. Four years was around the time that all the charges in the Waco biker shootout case were dismissed. And that was a much more complex case with hundred of defendants and mountains of prosecutorial pigheadedness.
The Democrats running Houston’s criminal justice system today claim to care deeply about stopping police misconduct, but don’t seem capable of dispensing justice in anything like a timely manner to the one glaring redball of police misconduct they already have in their laps.

‘Tis a wonderful thing, how the Democrats manage to run cities into the ground for generations, and then still manage to shift blame to the Republicans and those nasty “conservative” elements.
Who the hell has been running the city administrations responsible for running the police in all these cities, pray tell?
And, just why is it that those nasty Republicans keep getting blamed for the excesses? Can someone please explain the supine manner in which they, the Establishment GOP, just roll over and accept the blame for all of that?
It’s a shell game. The oligarchy wants you to believe that there are alternatives, that the political parties are not working hand-in-glove on the daily.
Reality? LOL… All the Republican establishments do is hold their hands out for their share of the loot, and then put up little to no resistance for any of this crap going on.
Friend of mine from Portland, Oregon offered me a minor corrective, the other day: Per his actual eye-witness observation, there were Republican candidates for Portland’s city council and other government offices that basically said that they would not and could not oppose any of the many things the Democrats have done down there. Those Republicans refused to campaign against the excesses, saying it was an impossible uphill fight.
So, half the damn problem is that our supposed opposition really… Isn’t. I dare say that had those moral cowards campaigned on a platform of opposition to the stupid, they’d have at least made some headway.
You can see the same thing in our state Republicans. Lazy, venal, go-along-to-get-along cooperatives, aiding and abetting. When the time comes, and they’re all being led down to the lantern posts, I ain’t raising a finger to intervene. They all more than deserve what is coming to them.
Kirk,
Just look at Diane “just say aye” Feinstein’s little blue screen of death moment, or Grug Fetterman, or even Mitch McConnell, or the effing POTUS. Imagine if this was the army, having virtual vegetables in critical positions of leadership.
It’s unbelievable how the uniparty protects and recuses itself from the duty of telling these people to move on in the name of collegiality, and the country suffers. It shouldn’t be a partisan issue, but we are in a deep culture war, so decrepit gerontocrats keep their jobs.
