78 years ago today, some 175,000 American, British and Canadian troops were either being dropped behind enemy lines or coming ashore under enemy fire at Gold, Juno, Sword, Omaha and Utah beaches.
Here’s some footage of D-Day:
There are still D-Day veterans alive today, but soon the war will pass out of living memory.

And it will be removed from our history altogether. We just can’t have the US presented in anything resembling a positive way.
Some of us will remember.
The first unit I was assigned to in the Army was the 299th Engineer Battalion. They were tasked with breaching the beach obstacles on Omaha and Utah beaches. They were some of the first men ashore; they left over a third of their numbers there on the beach.
I got to meet some of the survivors of the invasion landing. The losses they experienced that day left many of them marked for life, both for good and bad. They did what needed doing, which is all we can ever ask of any soldier. All you can do is hope to hell you can match what they did, when the time comes.
