This Memorial Day I’m honoring two Medal of Honor winners that have left us, John N. Reese, Jr. and Cleto Rodriguez, who between them killed 87 Imperial Japanese soldiers in Manila during the Philippines campaign in February of 1945. Rodriguez was a Texan who passed away in 1990, while Reese was an Oklahoma boy killed at age 21 during the action cited.
Their two citations:
REESE, JOHN N., JR.
Rank and organization: Private First Class, U.S. Army, Company B, 148th Infantry, 37th Infantry Division
Place and date: Paco Railroad Station, Manila, Philippine Islands. 9 February 1945
Entered service at: Pryor, Okla.
G.O. No.: 89, 19 October 1945
Citation: He was engaged in the attack on the Paco Railroad Station, which was strongly defended by 300 determined enemy soldiers with machineguns and rifles, supported by several pillboxes, 3 20mm. guns, 1 37-mm. gun and heavy mortars. While making a frontal assault across an open field, his platoon was halted 100 yards from the station by intense enemy fire. On his own initiative he left the platoon. accompanied by a comrade, and continued forward to a house 60 yards from the objective. Although under constant enemy observation. the 2 men remained in this position for an hour, firing at targets of opportunity, killing more than 35 Japanese and wounding many more. Moving closer to the station and discovering a group of Japanese replacements attempting to reach pillboxes, they opened heavy fire, killed more than 40 and stopped all subsequent attempts to man the emplacements. Enemy fire became more intense as they advanced to within 20 yards of the station. From that point Pfc. Reese provided effective covering fire and courageously drew enemy fire to himself while his companion killed 7 Japanese and destroyed a 20-mm. gun and heavy machinegun with handgrenades. With their ammunition running low, the 2 men started to return to the American lines, alternately providing covering fire for each other as they withdrew. During this movement, Pfc. Reese was killed by enemy fire as he reloaded his rifle. The intrepid team, in 21/2 hours of fierce fighting, killed more than 82 Japanese, completely disorganized their defense and paved the way for subsequent complete defeat of the enemy at this strong point. By his gallant determination in the face of tremendous odds, aggressive fighting spirit, and extreme heroism at the cost of his life, Pfc. Reese materially aided the advance of our troops in Manila and providing a lasting inspiration to all those with whom he served.
RODRIGUEZ, CLETO
Rank and organization: Technical Sergeant (then Private), U.S. Army, Company B, 148th Infantry, 37th Infantry Division
Place and date: Paco Railroad Station, Manila, Philippine Islands, 9 February 1945
Entered service at: San Antonio, Tex.
G.O. No.: 97, 1 November 1945
Citation: He was an automatic rifleman when his unit attacked the strongly defended Paco Railroad Station during the battle for Manila, Philippine Islands. While making a frontal assault across an open field, his platoon was halted 100 yards from the station by intense enemy fire. On his own initiative, he left the platoon, accompanied by a comrade, and continued forward to a house 60 yards from the objective. Although under constant enemy observation, the 2 men remained in this position for an hour, firing at targets of opportunity, killing more than 35 hostile soldiers and wounding many more. Moving closer to the station and discovering a group of Japanese replacements attempting to reach pillboxes, they opened heavy fire, killed more than 40 and stopped all subsequent attempts to man the emplacements. Enemy fire became more intense as they advanced to within 20 yards of the station. Then, covered by his companion, Pvt. Rodriguez boldly moved up to the building and threw 5 grenades through a doorway killing 7 Japanese, destroying a 20-mm. gun and wrecking a heavy machinegun. With their ammunition running low, the 2 men started to return to the American lines, alternately providing covering fire for each other’s withdrawal. During this movement, Pvt. Rodriguez’ companion was killed. In 2 l/2 hours of fierce fighting the intrepid team killed more than 82 Japanese, completely disorganized their defense, and paved the way for the subsequent overwhelming defeat of the enemy at this strongpoint. Two days later, Pvt. Rodriguez again enabled his comrades to advance when he single-handedly killed 6 Japanese and destroyed a well-placed 20-mm. gun by his outstanding skill with his weapons, gallant determination to destroy the enemy, and heroic courage in the face of tremendous odds, Pvt. Rodriguez, on 2 occasions, materially aided the advance of our troops in Manila.

There’s a much criticized spending bill with a lot of poison pill provisions and a tiny bit of border wall funding President Trump is expected to sign, and then declare a national emergency to get the wall built.
While that’s up in the air, enjoy a Friday LinkSwarm:
Democrats don’t want to detain or deport violent felons. If that’s the hill they want to die on, bring on the shutdown. (Hat tip: Director Blue.)
“National Border Patrol Council president Brandon Judd told Breitbart News Tonight on Wednesday that Congress had ignored the advice of experts when reaching a deal to provide less than $1.4 billion for border fencing.”
The ludicrous nature of the Democrats’ “Green New Deal” continues to haunt them, leading to a lot of walking back economically insane socialist goals. NPR has the original text of the proposal.
Jonah Goldberg on the subject:
These people think that they can adequately plan and run — for all time — an economic system from Washington that would guarantee: “a job with a family-sustaining wage, adequate family and medical leave, paid vacations, and retirement security to all people of the United States” as well as “access to nature.”
But they can’t even plan the roll out of a non-binding resolution and some press-release materials? And, when confronted by their own words, their immediate response was to accuse their enemies of sabotaging them? Gosh, by all means, let’s give them control of the entire economy. That couldn’t work out badly. I mean “Mistakes happen when doing time launches like this coordinating multiple groups and collaborators,” when uploading FAQs, not when doing anything as simple as commandeering the bulk of the U.S. economy.
Republicans pull the dirtiest trick on Democrats ever: forcing them to vote on the Green New Deal lunacy they just endorsed. (Hat tip: Stephen Green at Instapundit.)
Bill Barr confirmed as Attorney General.
Amazon cancels it’s New York City HQ2 expansion plans. Government shouldn’t be throwing subsidies at targeted corporations (nor picking winners and losers). The decision is also rich, zesty schadenfreude for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez screwing over New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who both pushed hard for the Amazon deal.
This story should be absolutely infuriating to everyone on all sides of the political spectrum: rather than preserving or processing DNA rape kits, Oklahoma destroyed them.
How do Democrats expect to get socialism to work nationwide when they can’t even get it to work at one Panera Bread location?
Twitter bias is real. “Of 22 prominent, politically active individuals who are known to have been suspended since 2005 and who expressed a preference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, 21 supported Donald Trump.” (Hat tip: Director Blue.)

As today is a made-up celebration called “Earth Day,” be sure to have beef for dinner…
Reminder: “Officials at VA’s Phoenix hospital manipulated wait-time data to make it appear they were connecting doctors and veterans seeking appointments much faster than they actually were. This was done so VA managers at the Arizona facility could keep getting generous performance bonuses. They got their bonuses but dozens of waiting veterans died.” So how did the VA address the problem? They hired someone accused of doing the exact same thing at another hospital.

How Ted Cruz could beat Hillary Clinton. “Clinton is entering the general election with glaring vulnerabilities of her own. Her image is toxic to Republicans and independents, and her popularity among Democrats is now at an all-time low as a presidential candidate, according to Gallup’s polling. It won’t take a top-tier Republican candidate to win.” Also: “Cruz consistently runs far more competitively against Clinton than Trump does.”
“It’s not just Wall Street banks. Most companies and groups that paid Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton to speak between 2013 and 2015 have lobbied federal agencies in recent years, and more than one-third are government contractors, an Associated Press review has found. Their interests are sprawling and would follow Clinton to the White House should she win election this fall.”

A few random facts about the Oklahoma beheader, Alton Nolen, AKA Jah’Keem Yisrael, AKA Alton Threadgill (the name on his Facebook profile):
The Oklahoma Department of Corrections lists his birthdate as 08/16/1984 and gives his vital statistics as “Black Male; 6 ft. 0 in. tall; 198 pounds; Black hair; Brown eyes.”
He has four tattoos, including one reading AS-SALAAMU ATAIKUM (the traditional Muslim greeting of “Peace be upon you”).
He has a long criminal rap sheet including multiple drug charges, escape from detention and assault on a police officer.
His attack was stopped by a lawful gun owner: “Mark Vaughan, who is the chief operating officer of Vaughan Foods and is also an Oklahoma County reserve deputy, confronted Nolen, and at that time shot him and stopped the threat and the assault.”
He reportedly converted to Islam while in prison.
His Facebook Page shows a propensity for SCREAMING CAPITAL LETTERS in his Muslim proselytizing.
As of this writing he has 1,554 Facebook friends.
Actual example of his prose and thinking:
I WANTED TO UPLOAD THIS VIDEO TO SCHOOL EVERYBODY ON HOW THE MEXICANS, PUERTO RICANS AND DOMINICANS ARE SPEAKING THE SAME LANGUAGE BUT ARE DIFFERENT SKIN COLORS. WELL AFTER THE ISRAELITES FLED ISRAEL (THE WHITE SPANIARDS CAUGHT AND ENSLAVED THEM AND RAPED THEM FROM THEIR ORIGINAL LANGUAGE WHICH WAS HEBREW AND FORCED THEM TO SPEAK SPANISH!!!!
He also had some interesting theories on the income tax:
For u Muslims under Islam Its a Major sin in Islam to pay taxes. If u tryna reach Janna you literally can go to your job Human Resource office and file exempt on your 1040s -You have to note that your Muslim!
And on history
I Like To Give A Shout Out To Our First Black President John Hanson, Whoms Not The Complexion Of Obama But More Like Kuta Ken Ta lol…Yeh Dis Man Im Speakn On Became Amerikas aka Babylon First President Ever, Whom Took Office In 1781, So Yeh Once Again First President Ever, Whom Was An Moor. Happy JuneTeenth!!!!!!
I’m going to guess these earlier quotes (from 2012) date from before his conversion:
ON The Klok SITTN N Thankn AND WUTZ IN THE KLOUDS IS MNY BAGS…N I SWEAR THESE BITCHES LNG HAIR N BIG BUTTS AINT MAKN IT NO BETTER…LIKE CHRIS BROWN DNT B HOLDN BAK LOL
IF U 25 N STILL TALKN NIGGAZ AINT SHYT….MAYBE ITZ YO PUSSY DAT KEEP ATTRAKTIN NOT SHYT NIGGAZ LOL
Um….
The prose exhibited in his Facebook post certainly do not suggest a college education. Or perhaps Langston University’s curriculum is not exactly rigorous…
A Twitter user reports: “The Oklahoma press conference is long over and the probably 30-40 muslims are still hanging around. Some passing out pro-islam literature…I must note none of the muslims have mentioned violence yet none have condemned this attack.”

It’s been a while since I did a roundup of gun news, so here it is. Just don’t be surprised if you read some of this on gunny blogs weeks ago…
Obama praises “Australia’s gun laws.” Which is to say, the total confiscation of all firearms from law-abiding citizens.
So how much “safer” has New York’s gun-grabbing SAFE act made New York City?
In the last month alone, 129 people were shot, according to the latest CompStat figures, or 43.3 percent more than for the same period last year.
Since January, there has been an overall 13.2 percent increase in shooting victims, while 10.2 percent fewer guns have been recovered compared to 2013.
Of course, some of that is probably due to the work of new Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio…
Oklahoma’s House and Senate successfully override governor Mary Fallin’s veto of a bill establishing a 15 day denial window for local law enforcement to turn down approval of certain NFA-regulated firearms and accessories (silencers, suppressors, short-barreled rifles and shotguns, machine guns, etc.), after which approval becomes automatic. Why a Republican governor tried to veto a popular pro-Second Amendment bill (which passed 39-0 in the Senate and 86-3 House, which puts Fallin to the left of many state Democrats) in a deep red state is a deep mystery…
CNN admits it got played by the lying liars at Everytown for Gun Safety, who produced a map of “school shootings,” 80% of which were easily debunked as bogus. (Hat tip: Alphecca.)
George Soros-funded Moms Demand Action demands Tulsa Chipolte kick out the Oklahoma Open Carry group. The result?
The manager refused to kick out OKOCA and even gave them free drinks. MDA activists then proceeded to take pictures of the gun owners and attempted to portray them as intimidating and threatening. The management wasn’t having any of it; he threw Moms Demand Action out of his store!
How did I miss this? The son of infamous Philadelphia abortion doctor (and now convicted felon) Kermit Gosnell “shot several times” by a homeowner during an “alleged home invasion.” Gosnell family values…

Target considering a gun ban. Contact links there to let them know this is a bad idea…
Armed Cincinnati homeowner confronts three home invaders. Result: All three arrested, one with life-threatening injuries. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes…
Probably the saddest story you’ll read all year. Seriously. We’re talking industrial strength sad here. Click with caution. (Hat tip Dwight.)
Debunking the latest over-hyped bullet.

Evidently ObamaCare is just a bottomless well of suck. The news is bad and getting worse, especially for cancer patients and Democrats.
First up: 15 of 19 nationally recognized cancer centers are not in ObamaCare. Let me tell you that this is a big, big deal for cancer patients.
My father is currently battling stage 3 esophageal cancer, and is having surgery next week. (Prognosis at this stage looks very good.) After his initial diagnosis, it took him something like a month to take all the tests and see all the specialists to go over the results of the tests, followed by radiation and chemo (which was every bit as fun as you imagine).
After finding the tumor was still there (but thankfully not metastasized), my father wondered if it might be possible to undertake experimental drug treatments rather than surgery, and I found them the number of MD Anderson‘s cancer study hotline ((800) 392-1611, just in case you need it).
MD Anderson got all their medical stuff, had them come early the next week, and completed all the consultations and tests (including EKG, X-Ray, CAT scan, PET scan) in a single day. Boom, boom, boom, boom.
“it was like night and day.”
Mortality for this type of surgery can be as high as 19%. At MD Anderson? 2%.
Cancer is a scary thing under the best of circumstances; ObamaCare makes it a whole lot scarier, especially when “bending the cost curve” involves eliminating the most effective treatment.
More ObamaCare news:
Getting ObamaCare in parts of Oklahoma means having to drive more than an hour for treatment
“If Obamacare isn’t a disaster, what does a disaster look like?”
And here are four more reasons premiums will be going up.
Enjoy your 47% insurance rate hike thanks to ObamaCare, 27-year olds!
Think it’s hard to enroll in ObamaCare? It’s even harder to un-enroll.
Democrats choices on handling ObamaCare? Not good.

Time for another roundup of gun news, with a nice savory side-dish of criminal stupidity:
Dick Metcalf is like a guy who converted to Islam, then wonders why he can’t be a Catholic bishop anymore.
Could Abramski vs. United States strike down the ATF’s “straw purchase” regulations? Even so, unlike the poster, I don’t think this will mean “the gun-grabber’s drive for universal background checks is over as a constitutional matter,” since the gun grabbers will never give up on trying to disarm the law-abiding…
12-year Oklahoma girl shoots home invader. She and her family are the sort of people Piers Morgan wants to disarm.
Sprouts decides that they don’t want law-abiding gun owners to shop there.
Florida lawmakers attempt to get the state to ban cooperation with Obama’s gun-grabbing agenda. Since it cites the Tenth Amendment, it’s not quite South Carolina’s 1832 Ordinance of Nullification… (Hat tip: Alphecca.)
Illinois wants to disarm those on medical marijuana.
Here’s a ProTip for another criminal supergenius: If you’re a registered sex offender, don’t film yourself firing guns.
Nicholas Johnson’s Negroes and the Gun: The Black Tradition of Arms is now out.
Naked and masturbating in the middle of an intersection is no way to go through life, son. (Hate tip: Ace.)
